Inspiring change and transformation...

I am currently on my housemate's computer, watching the inauguration of a new university that is opening in the Middle East. I have no idea what anyone is saying, because they are speaking Arabic. I am following along on Twitter, because there is a representative of the university translating the speeches.

Some of the things that people are saying are powerful and moving, that I must admit. The videos they have made and the music they are playing is inspiring. The lights show and the fireworks are captiving. It makes me feel like I am watching a movie, but it's actually happening in real life.

I wonder how it's affecting those who are there live and those of us who are watching the webcast. People are tweeting that they are crying and that the university has made some of the country's people proud.

What will these feelings make people do? That's something I'm wondering about right now.

The president of the university talked about what a great gift this university is and how lives will be transformed. It really has made me think, what do these human attempts lead us to? I am not being pessimistic, nor am I trying to stop anyone from trying to make this world a better place. I am reflecting on where these attempts will get us if they aren't grounded in the One who created the heavens and the earth.

Can true transformation come from humans? Or does true transformation have to come from the One who has the ability to change lives? I am going to stick with the latter.

So good attempt, new university. I am sure you will make a big name for yourself in the whole world over the next few years. Yet, as long as you do research in the name of the one who gave you the money to start this university, it will not be able to transform lives the way you hope.

But praise God, who can and who will transform us into the people who were meant to be.
