The cost is great, the joys are greater...

Last weekend, 20 of us from McMaster Korean Christian Fellowship gathered together for our annual fall retreat. It was a great time of fun, serious conversations, and memories being made. The theme of the weekend was "The Cost of Following Jesus".

Many people who attended had been raised as a Christian, and haven't had much time to think about a) if there is a cost to following Jesus and b) if there is a cost, what that cost is. We also had some non-believers join us and the theme fit for them too, as they were considering whether they would follow Jesus.

We had some good conversations about how different our lives would be if Jesus was in every area of our life, and how we don't even think twice about it right now. We buy what we want, we get what we like. But we were challenged to think what life would be like if we didn't buy the brand names, pooled our money together, and gave it someone who was in need.

We hit on the cost and suffering a lot, but also had opportunities to talk about how living life with Jesus, first, and then sharing and focusing on others, second, actually brings a lot of joy. It's true, there are sacrifices that need to be made when we choose to live this way, but the joy cannot compare. It makes everything worth it, and I do speak from experience.

My love for my students grew tremendously this weekend. I remember sitting in session and sensing the Holy Spirit increase my heart to receive more from them, to walk with them in their pain, and to celebrate with them in their rejoicing.

God has entrusted these people to me, and I want to learn to love them the way that He does.
