Not about changing the world...

Yesterday, I attended my brother's high school commencement. It was good to be there and brought back memories because I graduated from the same high school. Also, I have not attended a graduation that is not my own in a really long time.

Anyway, as the names were being called and teachers were reading where students were going next year, a few thoughts popped into my head:

1. No one is going to McMaster into the Health Sciences program, which is what I graduated from
2. Most people are going into business or engineering
3. I wonder if any of these people are Christian
4. I wonder how God sees each and every single one of these students
5. I wonder if any of these students will end up at an Inter-Varsity campus group in the next 4 years

Working with university students puts a totally different spin when I go to a commencement. I spent a lot of time wondering whether the students were Christian and how their life would be shaped by going to a campus fellowship.

I was also glad to be there to hear the valedictorian's speech. He was definitely well liked by the school community, whether students or staff, and he was very Christian. He quoted the Gospel of Luke and Joel Houston from Hillsongs United, but not in a real Christian way. Instead, he took those quotations and used them to challenge the graduating class to live out boldly, to be agents of change, rather than ignoring a situation.

It was really powerful and motivation and he could have talked for longer. I hope that people take to heart what he said, because I know I did. He was clear in saying that it's not possible to change the world, but it is possible to change the way things work around us, if they are causing injustice.

So I hope and pray that I will not stand from the sidelines and perpetuate a problem, but instead, be a part of the solution, as God has called us to be a part of His plan in redeeming humanity.
