I left my parents' house today to go for a brief walk to run errands. It felt strange that the bottom of the trees weren't painted white. I could understand what people in the park were saying. I could read the street signs and advertisement signs on buildings.
When I went to the grocery store, I decided not to take an escalator or an elevator, but instead the stairs, since I have gotten used to walking up 7 flights of stairs at least 3 times a day. It was good to see familiar fruits and vegetables. It felt weird not seeing fruit and vegetable stands lining the streets and seeing people try to call me over to buy their produce.
It was strange that my deodarant cost only $2.81, instead of a few hundred tenge. It was strange that it was marked as $2.41. I had forgotten about the tax.
Instead of waiting for a bus to take me to lunch, I just hopped into my car and drove to my grandparents' place to take them out for lunch.
So right now, I can't figure out what I miss more: life here or life where I was for the past month. I think I enjoy bits of both and want to incorporate it into my life back in Canada. I really liked how I had to walk or take the bus everywhere while I was away. I definitely have become too dependent on my car.
I don't miss having 500-5000 tenge bills all the time. It made me feel like I was carrying a lot of money.
These are just some of the things I noticed today on my short walk. I'm sure more things will come up over the next few weeks.
