Many thoughts are crossing through my mind right now. I had two great conversations with two different friends today, both of whom I have not seen for a couple of months. One has really stuck with me, though. It has to do with children. One of my friends is currently doing an internship with a church and working with the children's ministry.
She asked a question that I have thought long and hard about. Most Chinese parents' hopes for their children are that they do well in school, get a good job, and have stability in their lives. Yet, where is God in the picture?
It seems as though for parents, if their children go to church, their job is done. Shouldn't the primary role of parents be to teach their children to live for God and His Kingdom fully, even if that means that they don't get the best job and make the most money?
I know that parenting is hard. Having a bit of experience in it when I baby sit my supervisor's children, I know that it gets frustrating and complicated. Yet, there is something in me that knows that if we put God first and teach children to do the same, their every need will be met.
I have experienced this over the past two years. As I have followed God's calling on my life, He has provided everything for me, especially in terms of finances. I have not been in debt and every month, I have a bit left for my own fun and entertainment.
So this has made me think a lot today about children, their role in our churches, their role in society, and what God intends for us to learn from them. It seems like there is a lot to learn from children, especially since Jesus tells the disciples that they should receive the Kingdom like a little child (Mark 10.13-16).
