I have been fired up these days about the environment and it's not because of Earth Hour, Earth Day, or climate change. As I have been thinking more about God and creation, and reading this book, it's hit me more and more that God created humans to steward the earth. He didn't want us to harm it, abuse it, or waste it.
The earth is God's creation given to us. We need to respect and care for it.
I have always been mindful of the resources I use. My housemates and I turn off all unessential lights in the house and try to unplug the appliances that aren't in use. I try to use water minimally, even when taking a shower. My house is looking to switch to ecofriendly cleaning products, or even making our own.
Lately, though, I have been thinking about the clothes that I purchase. I don't own a lot of clothes to begin with, because I am a minimalist at heart. Yet, as I think about the clothes that I don't wear anymore but are still in good condition, it makes me think how others must be thinking the same.
So a few weeks ago, I went to a second hand store for the first time and bought a piece of clothing. I also took an old top and zip-up hoodie that my friend wasn't wearing anymore. This felt right, to not buy something new, but to buy something that already has been made, so not to use up more of the earth's resources. And besides, it felt new to me!
I'm sure that there's a lot more that I'm not doing, but in the meantime, I'm going to try and do as much as I know. There's a long way to go, but I'm taking this one step at a time, hoping to make more changes as I go along.
