There have been many pieces of Scripture that I have been studying. This week alone, I have looked at John 1.1-18, Ephesians 2, and Luke 4.14-30. I'm not sure if it's the theme of my life right now, or if I am making myself notice this, but in all these passages, there has been one major theme that has stood out to me: Jesus is expanding everyone's picture of who He is and what the Kingdom is.
I won't speak for anyone else but myself, but I notice that my picture of Jesus is just way too small. I believe him to be the One who has brought about redemption, but only in certain areas of my life. He couldn't possibly bring about healing and freedom to the broken relationships of my past. He couldn't be powerful enough to bring others to Himself.
Yet, when I look at all three passages, the message I get is that my picture of Jesus is too small and that I am hoarding Him for myself. He is for all peoples and all nations! He is the Good News!
And in all of this, I am seeing a bigger picture of how both the Old and New Testament are pointing to Jesus, how the Israelites in the Old Testament were supposed be a channel of God's redemption, and how the Twelve appointed by Jesus are the new way God is redeeming His people. Yet, this time, not by birth, but by Jesus Himself.
